When a tooth is broken or decayed, a restorative material such as a metal, plastic or resin is used to restore both tooth structure and function. In the case of a decayed tooth, the decayed tooth structure must first be removed before placing the restorative material. The removal of decay usually causes the loss of a portion of the healthy tooth structure. Therefore, it is important to detect a cavity at early stages to avoid the removal of large portion of the tooth structure. Losing tooth structure compromises the stability, and durability of the restorative material.
